A Level crossing (also called a railroad crossing, road through railroad, train crossing or grade crossing) is a crossing on one level ("at-grade intersection") — without recourse to a bridge or tunnel — of a railway line by a road or path. The term also applies when a light rail line with separate right-of-way (or a reserved track tramway) crosses a road. There is a risk of serious collisions at level crossings and may result in multiple fatalities.

Why do some people go across a level crossing when the barriers are down?
Q. If the barriers are down, that means a train is comming. Its common sense, isn't it?

A. To stupidly save time and because most of time its assumed that the train won't be along for a minute after the barriers come down.

UK Railways - Level Crossing Question.?
Q. I live near Hampden Park - officially the most busy rail crossing in Europe. Often, the barrier goe's down and the flashing red lights come on at least a whole minute before the train crosses - obviously this leads to frustration with the drivers waiting. Are there any UK Railway Engineers/Guards out there who can explain this. Is it a safety regulation that the barriers have to be lowered long before the train crosses?? Thanks.

A. Welcome to the world of signalling! I am a signaller and operate Level Crossings. It's all to do with safety and performance. Dependant on the railway line speed depends on when a level crossing is lowered. Our instructions state that crossings have to be operated in order not to delay trains. A delayed train obviously brings financial penalties to Network Rail. If your local one is lowered up to 1 min before, I would imagine it is quite a high speed line. Not very nice for the motorist I know. At the end of it all, it is also for your safety that these things are lowered in good time. If you feel that you are waiting too long and would like a specific answer for the operation of Hampden Park Level Crossing, you can call the Network… [cont.]

How to file 2nd level appeal with Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of NJ?
Q. I have been fighting them for almost 2 years. I finally received a decision letter regarding my first appeal. Now I'm filing the second. The first time I called they said it is done over the phone and the 2nd time they said in writing. The website isn't helpful either. Has anyone done this? Any advice?

A. It might have changed. Do they have an "official" second level of appeal? In any case, you write a letter, including the reason they denied the coverage the first time, and your evidence that the denial reason is wrong.
